(Burnaby Winter Club – Burnaby, BC)—Four goals in the third period allowed the Vancouver North West Giants to complete a weekend sweep over the visiting Cariboo Cougars in a thrilling 6-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Burnaby Winter Club.
The win, coupled with the Okanagan Rockets’ 5-2 loss at Planet Ice in Coquitlam to the Vancouver North East Chiefs, pulled the Giants into a first-place tie with Okanagan atop the BC Major Midget League standings.
Vancouver North West had also won on Saturday night, defeating Cariboo by a score of 9-3.
In the Sunday game, the Giants trailed 3-2 after 40 minutes before exploding for four goals in the final period. With Giants defenseman Ty Schultz in the penalty box for a boarding infraction, Keyvan Mokhtari scored shorthanded to give Vancouver North West a 4-3 lead with 10:49 remaining in the game.
Cariboo evened things up just 20 seconds later with Jesse Roach potting a power-play goal to make it 4-4. The Giants, though, went ahead for good on Colton Kerfoot’s goal with 7:45 remaining—his second of the game—and Dante Fabbro added an insurance marker two minutes later, his third goal of this two-game series.
With his three points (2 G, 1 A), Kerfoot has taken over the scoring race in the BCMML, moving past Okanagan’s Tyson Jost. Kerfoot now has 15 goals and 34 points in 20 games, while Jost remained at 32 points after being held off the scoresheet on Sunday.
It was the Cougars’ fourth straight loss following a stretch which saw them win three of four in mid-November.
“I thought for the first 40 minutes we played fairly well… We just didn’t find a way to close out the game,” lamented Cougars head coach Bryan MacLean afterward. “Credit to the Giants. They stuck with it for 60 minutes. We got away from our structure in the last 20 minutes, and that’s what ended up costing us the hockey game.
“But it was a lot better than yesterday’s game and that’s something to build off of, so we’re happy about that.”
Through 20 games in the 2013-14 BC Major Midget League season, the Giants are 16-3-1 and are now tied with Okanagan atop the league standings. Cariboo dropped to 8-11-1.
Elsewhere in the BCMML on Sunday, the Fraser Valley Thunderbrids defeated the South Island Royals 4-2 at Chilliwack’s Prospera Centre to earn a split of their weekend series. Austin Wellsby scored a hat trick for Fraser Valley (8-10-2), and Hayden Guilderson had the other Thunderbird tally. Brandon Tutte had a goal and an assist for South Island (8-10-2).
In Coquitlam, the Vancouver North East Chiefs (8-9-3) bounced back from a 7-2 shellacking the night before with a strong 5-2 victory over the Okanagan Rockets. For the Rockets, it was just their third loss all year as they dropped to 16-3-1. Vancouver North East built a 3-0 lead midway through the second period and hung on for the win. San Chung had two goals and an assist for the Giants, and Ziyan Karim also contributed a goal and two assists. Brett Young had a goal and an assist for Okanagan.
In Kamloops, the Thompson Blazers (1-14-5) and Kootenay Ice (3-13-4) battled to a 2-2 tie. Coy Prevost and Tyler Van Steinburg each had a goal and an assist for the Ice.
Meanwhile, in Langley, the Valley West Hawks (14-6-0) pulled out a 5-2 win over the visiting North Island Silvertips (8-10-2). Matt Bradley potted two goals and added an assist for the Hawks in the victory, giving him 28 points (14 G, 14 A) in 17 games this season.
